Farmhouse location as identified in J. (James) Carson Miller’s Jacob Miller of 1748: His Descendants & Connections, Parts I-IV., as well as other sources. The house that Martin lived in was located behind the current house, which appears to have either been built by Samuel Miller or his son by his second Marriage, Jacob S. Miller (01/08/1861 – Unknown).
The exact boundaries of the original farm proper are not currently known, nor is the exact date when Martin acquired this property. We do have information on the farm both through the Chancery Records for Martin Miller’s Estate, and for his son Samuel Miller’s estate.
We know that Samuel Miller and his 2nd wife Mary gave a portion of this land was given to the Church of the Brethren to use to build a church – which was located on what is now the corner of Main Street (VA Route 257) and Oakwood Drive (Route 704). Unconfirmed legend has it that the land for Oaklawn Cemetery across the street was also given to the church by Samuel Miller and his 2nd Wife Mary, however, this is not directly mentioned or confirmed by the deed documents which simply mention land for the building of a church building proper. Additionally, this land was across a street (now Oakwood Drive) that was extant in that time and we do not have any source information to confirm whether or not Samuel owned that land.
