Chancery Case: Martin Miller Estate, Rockingham County, VA 1853.
This case, specifically, relates to the closing of Martin Miller’s estate following his death in 1852. It is likely that given the value of the estate, the large number of children and grandchildren, and the fact that those children were comprised of living, deceased, local, and non-local members, and the fact that Samuel, who was Martin’s second-born son, bought his estate prior to his death (likely due to his older sibling David having moved to Ohio) made this case uniquely challenging to settle and was thus taken to Chancery.

Essentially, however, it is a case that is difficult to decide using existing law that requires special adjudication. These cases often deal with estates, debt, and land disputes.
